meet Joni…

I got into counseling because, over the years, I often felt stuck in my “stuff.” When I had the opportunity to come alongside people in ministry or other settings, and they were struggling or stuck in something, it often felt like we both somehow knew God and faith, and the Word was the answer, or at least knew it was supposed to be. However, we didn’t always understand exactly how to have that Truth fully liberated and set free in a transforming way. Especially in real-time, in the moment. Like when we really needed it. It seemed that I (and others I sat with) could logically acknowledge or say Truth or what we knew we should be able to do, but it often felt completely separate from the real-life, in-the-trenches experience. Especially when we really, really needed it.

As I walked out my own stuff and worked it through, it led me to pursue counseling to learn and better understand why we are the way we are and what we could do about it. I want to learn from and filter the many decades of psychology and research through a Christian worldview to keep and use what it has to offer in a way that honors and supports faith and discards what doesn’t. I want to offer the same to you. I will not put my beliefs on you, and I absolutely will hold a safe space for your beliefs, whether they include God or not. I will walk with you in a way that honors and integrates what is healing for you. For some clients, that means they are looking for explicit Christian counseling, and we talk about God and faith and how that impacts what they are facing right now. And for others, they are not, and that means we don’t talk about God at all, and that is completely up to you.

A bit more about me...I am a Colorado native from a bigger-than-average family (ten children, to be exact, and since people often ask...I am number 8). I married my high school sweetheart, who is also my best friend and favorite person in the world, even though we haven’t always liked each other at times. We have been married for 27 years, learning a lot, and are thankful we still get to walk out our “stuff” together. We have three adult kids, one lovely daughter-in-law (more of my favorite people in the world), and a stout, stubborn bulldog who is really more pig than dog. We have lived in Greeley for the past twenty-some-odd years with a fantastic pile of friends and a community that loves us well, and we wouldn’t want to do life without them. I love to read and learn about all kinds of things, ranging from neuroscience to gardening to how to make the best sauces or cookies. I dig studying the bible and theology stuff, drinking wine, playing outside, and if there is mud, all the better.
